Why KardiaMobile and more Info about Atrial Fibrillation

Why KardiaMobile?

From time to time people experience palpitations and other irregular heartbeats that might be noticed as a flutter in the chest or irregular heartbeats when checking the pulse.

A common frustration for people experiencing irregular pulses or a flutter in the chest is the delay between noticing the symptom and being able to see a doctor or specialist. Sometimes when you get to your doctor, the irregularity you experienced is not present.

Sometimes when a doctor or specialist suggests using a Holter monitor to collect ECG data if no event happens during the time you are being monitored, limited progress can be made, and diagnosis may be delayed.

KardiaMobile, the personal ECG, allows its user to capture real-time ECG data at home, in the workplace, or any other location so that the data you collect can be shared with your practitioner.

KardiaMobile is a vital home ECG collection device that can speed your assessment and diagnosis.

If you are experiencing life-threatening heart issues, please call for an emergency ambulance.

Atrial Fibrillation and Stroke

Atrial Fibrillation commonly leads to incomplete emptying of the Atria and clot formation. Small clots can end up moving to the brain and leading to stroke. In fact, around 1 in 5 people presenting to hospital with stroke are found to have underlying Atrial Fibrillation.

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia in the world which affects 2% of the global population. There is a growing prevalence of AF worldwide and in Australia & New Zealand it is now the leading cause of cardiac-related hospitalizations surpassing both heart failure and heart attack.

AF is an electrical disturbance of the heart caused by abnormal electrical signals within the atria which result in the atria contracting out of rhythm and leading to a rapid and irregular heartbeat.

People with AF can suffer from a broad range of symptoms such as; palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath, fatigue, and exercise intolerance. Those with AF are also at an increased risk of suffering from a stroke or developing heart failure especially if left untreated.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a type of irregular heartbeat that occurs when the heart’s upper chambers (atria) beat out of sync with the lower chambers (ventricles). This can lead to the formation of blood clots in the heart, which can then travel to the brain and cause a stroke.

Research has shown that people with atrial fibrillation are at a significantly higher risk of stroke than those without the condition. In fact, AF increases the risk of stroke by five times.

If a blood clot forms in the heart and travels to the brain, it can block a blood vessel, causing a stroke. Strokes that occur because of AF are often more severe than other types of strokes and can lead to permanent disability or death.

To reduce the risk of stroke in people with AF, doctors often prescribe blood-thinning medications like warfarin, dabigatran, rivaroxaban, or apixaban. These medications help to prevent blood clots from forming in the heart and reduce the risk of stroke.

What causes Atrial Fibrillation?

There are several cardio-metabolic risk factors that promote structural, electrical, and autonomic changes to the atria which result in the promotion of AF. The AF risk factors are;

  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
  • Type II Diabetes
  • Hyperlipidaemia
  • Physical Inactivity
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
